FOUR UNILAG STUDENTS, CHARGED FOR RAPING 17-YEAR-OLD GIRL

Another sexual assault scandal has hit a major Nigerian university, this time involving four students of the University of Lagos charged with the rape of a 17-year-old girl.

The young men accused of the heinous crime – 19-year-old Lanre Olayemi, Jeremiah Bamigbayan, Abisoye Atoyegbe and Nelson Onyeoziri, all aged 18 – were charged before an Ebute Meta court for allegedly gang raping the young victim on 17 March.

Prosecutor Innocent Effiong alleged that the suspected rapists, all Business Administration students at Unilag, had conspired to rape the victim, a student History and Strategic Studies at the University.
The student was reportedly cornered and overpowered at about 10:30 p.m. at Ozolua Boys Quarters on campus.

The accused, faced with a three-count charge, have pleaded not guilty to the charges leveled against him.
Magistrate Adesola Ikpatt adjourned the case to 30 April and in the mean time released the young men on bail in the sum of N100,000 each, with two sureties in like sum.
